Breeders Cup 2018 Schedule

Now that the Breeders Cup 2018 Schedule and Post Positions are set, let’s take a closer look at the contenders for each race. There are $30 million in purses and awards to give out this year!

There are Five Breeders Cup Races scheduled to run on Friday, November 2nd.  Starting with race # 5 which is the Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Race #5, Juvenile Turf Sprint: Race projection is for a slow early place however, there is an abundant amount of speed in this race. This could set up for a horse running from off the pace.

Race #6, Juvenile Fillies Turf: Early on pace projects to be a slow one. Advantage goes to the horses that will be close to the early pace. Trainer Chad Brown has won this particular race 3 out of the last 4 years. Chad Brown is the trainer for #6 Newspaperofrecord in this race.

Jockey Javier Castellano has won the last two (2016,2017) Juvenile Fillies Turf races. He is aboard #13 My Gal Betty in this race.

Race #7, Juvenile Fillies: Another hot pace is projected for this race, look to horses coming off the pace. This race begins a 2-day, Daily Double. The Juvenile Fillies (Race #7 on Friday) and the Longines Distaff (Race #9 on Saturday).

Race #8, Juvenile Turf: The pace could slow down in the middle of the race which may be tough for a closer to make up the ground on tired horses in the stretch. This race begins a 2-day, Daily Double. The Juvenile Turf (Race #8 on Friday) and the Longines Turf (Race #10 on Saturday). 

Irish trainer Aiden O’Brien has won this race 4 out of the past 7 years. He is the trainer for #14 Anthony Van Dyck in this year’s race.

Race #9, Sentient Jet Juvenile: This one is set up for a hot early, speed duel again look to a horse off of the pace and closers. This race begins a 2-day, Daily Double. The Sentient Jet Juvenile (Race #9 on Friday) and the Classic (Race #11 on Saturday).

There are Nine Breeders Cup races scheduled to run on Saturday, November 3rd starting with race # 3 which is the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Race #3, Filly & Mare Sprint: Lots of early speed in this one, may open up the race for a horse just off of the pace or a closer coming from behind.  Jockey Mike Smith has won 2 out of the last 4 Filly & Mare Sprint races. He is aboard #13 Marley’s Freedom, the morning line favorite at 8-5 odds. 

Winner: Shamrock Rose

 

 

Race #4, Turf Sprint: While the last race was projected to be a hot pace, this pace in this race projects to be a slow one. Horses that are close to the early pace have an advantage here. Jockey Joel Rosario has won 2 out of the last 4 Turf Sprint races. He is aboard on #5 Disco Partner for this race.

Race #5, Dirt Mile: Another slow pace projection for this race. Advantage goes to the horses close to the early pace.

Race #6, Filly & Mare Turf: This race is loaded with European entries with quite a few closers in this race. Both the 2016 & 2017 Filly & Mare Turf races were won by European entries (GB) and were both 3-year olds. 

Winner: Sistercharlie

 

 

Race #7, TwinSpires Sprint: The projection is for a slow pace for this race. Horses that are close to the early pace will have an advantage. Last year, Roy H tracked down Imperial Hint at the end. They go at it again this year. 

Trainer Peter Miller won the 2017 Breeders Cup Sprint race with returning champ #9 Roy H and is the trainer for #7 Distinctive B this year as well.

Race #8, Mile: European entries (10) dominate this race which is projected to have a slow early pace. There’s already a scratch of #9 Hunt (IRE).

Winner: Expert Eye

 

 

Race #9, Longines Distaff:  The pace projects to be a slow one for this race with the advantage to the horses that are close to the early pace.  Jockey John Velazquez won the 2017 Breeders Cup Distaff and is aboard #7 Midnight Bisou this year.  

This is the second half of the 2-day, Daily Double. The Juvenile Fillies (Race #7 on Friday) and the Longines Distaff (Race #9 on Saturday). 

Winner: Monomoy Girl

 

 

Race #10, Longines Turf: Could be a slow down in the middle of the race making it difficult for a closer to make up ground on tiring horses. The trainer combo of Aiden O’Brien and Ryan Moore have won this race 2 out of the last 5 years. This combo is on #5 Magical (IRE) this year.  

This is the second half of the 2-day, Daily Double. The Juvenile Turf (Race #8 on Friday) and the Longines Turf (Race #10 on Saturday). 

Winner: Enable

 

 

Race #11, Classic: This should absolutely set up as the name suggests, a Classic! Some of the greatest horses are running in this race. Only two European entries in the race #1 Thunder Snow (IRE) and #10 Yoshida (JPN). The last European horse to win the Classic was Invasor (ARG) in 2006.

Trainer Bob Baffert has won 3 out of the last 4 Breeders Cup Classic races. He has #6 McKinzie and #7 West Coast in this year’s Classic race. 

This is the second half of the 2-day, Daily Double. The Sentient Jet Juvenile (Race #9 on Friday) and the Classic (Race #11 on Saturday).
